In my last post I published pictures of garments that I thought had the most style, personal touch and trendiness. Some people probably thought that the items were not fashionable at all, and even the opposite of stylish… actually, I have a couple of friends who will think that they would never dress like that.
So this post is a simple attempt to define style, of course from my subjective perspective.
According to the dictionary style is “a fashionable elegance”; this leads us to search elegance as well; “tasteful richness of design”. Just by reading this, you know that one simple definition of style, or even of fashion, is impossible, it is a totally subjective topic, which is why it is considered an art. This is not my discovery; Alexander McQueen says “It’s a new era in fashion - there are no rules. It’s all about the individual and personal style, wearing high-end, low-end, classic labels, and up-and-coming designers all together.”
But going back to our dictionary definition, it mentions the word Design. Sometimes people think that if they keep up with every single fashion trend, they will be remembered as people with style or fashionable. I personally think this is a huge mistake. Having style is being able to pick the clothes from each trend that work the best for your body type, that fit your personality and that highlight your physical positive features.
On the other hand we find people who know how to match colors well, and have a regular selection of clothing, they manage to blend in with the crowd perfectly, since there’s not a lot from their outfit that will stick out. First of all, I think it is fine just wanting to blend, and not always having to make a fashion statement. But, in my case, every time I wear something that doesn’t communicates my style, I feel uncomfortable. In addition to that, a garment catches my eye when people are trying to make a statement and stand out; usually this doesn’t happen with a plain simple outfit, it happens with the unusual combination of colors and trends that shows so much confidence that is intriguing.
I am not here to tell you how to dress, or what accessories are cool and which ones are not, the purpose of this post (and my blog in general) is to show you the different ways of being fashionable without having to follow every single trend, to encourage you to wear whatever you feel comfortable with and make it work, to tell you that you can wear a simple white shirt and a pair of jeans and still look chic. I think there is more courage, personality and style when people are not afraid to express themselves through their clothes, and feel comfortable with it.
Don’t be afraid to mix it up little bit: trends, colors, shapes, textures… it is all allowed!! You can use nature as a guide, detail its combinations and you will always get it right.
Finally I collected some quotes from famous fashion minds, which I think support my argument:
- “Elegance is a question of personality, more than one's clothing” -Jean-Paul Gaultier
- “I don't do fashion, I am fashion” -Coco Chanel
- “Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak” -Rachel Zoe
- “You live but once; you might as well be amusing” By: Coco Chanel
- “The only rule is don't be boring and dress cute wherever you go. Life is too short to blend in” -Paris Hilton
- “In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different” -Coco Chanel
- “Style comes from knowing who you are and what you want to show to the world” -Nina Garcia
- "Fashion can be bought, Style one must possess." -Edna Woolman Chase
